Tennis ball lettuce was one of the most popular lettuces in the early 20th century. Cultivated by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello around 1809.  This  lettuce  grow  in small  rosette  of leaf  light green and are only 7" in diameter.  heads are tender.  Traditionally, lettuce  were pickled in brine and served as an accompaniment to many meals in the 18th century.
